Our group was the second largest group at the conference, the theme of which was
"Bridging Currents and Cultures," and consisted of 24 students, 5 faculty
members, and 4 staff members -- we have Bill and Betsy Leitch and their Fund for
Student Travel and Research to thank for the tremendous student cohort!
The students had a wonderful time, enjoying both the conference and the Big
Easy. They were great: 22 of them were involved in presentations of some kind!
2004 Portland Gathering and Meeting with
Architects
On
September 30th, Charlie, Barbara, and three students headed down to Portland to
meet with Scott Simons Architects at their office. Shortly thereafter, 20
more students and the Associates made their way to meet Charlie et al at Preti
Flaherty Law Offices in One City Center. Hosted by Deirdre O' Callaghan,
our gathering included many friends and alumni who enjoyed the chance to meet
our very thankful students and staff.
2003 Boston Alumni Gathering
Overlooking the bay in downtown Boston, the Skyline Room of the Boston Museum of
Science offered graduates, friends, and students of The Honors College a chance
to gather last October to celebrate the College’s success and to reconnect with
each other. Amy Benoit Frappier '99 spoke on her Ph.D. work in geological
sciences as a Graduate Fellow at the University of New Hampshire’s Climate
Change Research Center. As a side trip, we took our bus to Providence’s Trinity
Repertory Theater to see David Auburn’s Pulitzer and Tony winning play “Proof.”
Before the show, we had dinner at “Fire and Ice,” a create-it-yourself stir-fry
restaurant that turned out to be a very entertaining spot: a large renovated
warehouse filled with good smells, lots of food, and a huge circular grill.
Everyone left there with happy stomachs...
It was off to the windy city for
twenty-six UMaine Honors students when the National Collegiate Honors Council
held their annual meeting November
5th-13th, 2003. The title and
theme for the 2003 conference, “Finding Common Ground,” brought together
hundreds of presentations by
faculty, students, and administrators involved in Honors education.
Twenty-four students from the University of Maine were involved in at least one
of the many eclectic presentation at the conference.
2005 Spring Trip to Washington, D.C.
Our trip down to Washington coincided with the onset of the
second Gulf War. But we persevered, and the nearly forty students and five
staff members had an excellent time. The second day of the war saw the
entire group touring the Pentagon! While the event at the Library of
Congress with a talk by Charles Stanhope '71, our Honors grad at the Library,
was the cornerstone of the trip, the performance by the Capitol Steps and our
accommodations at the The Rouge were also highlights.
Twenty-one students joined Charlie, Barbara,
Emily, and Sarah at the national conference of the National Collegiate Honors
Council held in Salt Lake City for five days starting just before Halloween.
Seventeen of the twenty-one students were involved in at least one presentation,
some of them more. Several presented posters on research
or Honors topics, four were part of a presentation on the Honors Code,
others were involved in individual or group presentations on non-traditional
students in Honors, science in Honors, teaching and learning in Honors, the
Honors first-year curriculum, and building an Honors thesis archive. The
students also enjoyed dinner at the home of one of the students (who happens to
come from SLC!), toured the city, and took in the cultural and social sites some
2000 miles from Maine!
Eighteen students joined the Charlie and Barbara at
the national conference of the National Collegiate
Honors Council held in Chicago for five days just
after Halloween. Each of the eighteen students
was involved in at least one presentation, some of
them more. Several presented posters on research
or Honors topics, six were part of a very
well-received panel on the diversity of thesis
projects, and a group presented a video that they had
produced and acted in which stemmed from an Honors
Tutorial. In addition to attending numerous
conference sessions, the students also took advantage
of the opportunities that Chicago has to offer!
Here are some excellent
pictures taken by Bernice Cross and digitized by Alan
Stubbs. They very graphically document the end of
the original Robert B. Thomson Honors Center on
Thursday, 25 May 2000.
Ten students joined the Charlie and Barbara at the
national conference of the National Collegiate Honors
Council held in Orlando four five days just before
Halloween. Heather Olds, Adrianne Pusateri, and
Emily Cain gave a presentation describing the process
and their role as students on the Building Committee
for the Colvin Hall renovations.
This meeting took place in Colvin Hall following the
Honors 101 final. Over pizza and soda a large
number of students and faculty discussed the
preliminary drawings and made suggestions for
improvements.
