NCHC Conference Chicago 2001!

Eighteen students and two staff members attended the annual conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council held in Chicago from 31 October through 4 November.

Barbara Ouellette, Administrative Associate, Charlie Slavin, Director, and Emily Ann Cain '02, Senior Resident Assistant in Colvin Hall, presented Under One Roof: Integrating Academics and Residential Life in Honors. Amaranta Ruiz-Nelson '05 (new media), Rachel McNamee '02 (biological sciences), Ryan Cowan '02 (biological sciences), Ted Chernesky (biological sciences), Shinobu Uehara '02 (biological sciences) and Jon Moyer '03 (physics) presented a forty-minute video entitled Close Encounters of the Tomato Kind which they wrote, produced, and acted in based on an Honors tutorial offered by Mary Tyler (Biological Sciences).

Six thesis students, Jennifer Leddy '02 (communication sciences and disorders), Anastasia Harper '02 (history), Samantha Lott '02 (international affairs), Gabriel Bell (mathematics), Heidi Crosby '03 (biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology), and Jon Moyer presented a panel Discover the Diversity in Honors Thesis Designs. Matt Jura '03 (mathematics) participated in a student fishbowl on teaching and learning in Honors and led a booktalk on Darwin's The Origin of Species.

Students presenting at the poster session included Ian Chittenden '03 (English) Environmental Architecture, Amy VanDerWende '04 (political science) and Nicholas Cloutier '04 (journalism) Ideologies of Prominent Theoreticians and Philosophers, Richard A. Becker '03 (history) The Foreign Policy Philosophy of Senator Wayne Morse, Jonathan Beever '03 (physics and philosophy) Bringing Lectures into the Twenty-First Century, Heidi Crosby Carbon Monoxide Production in Plant Roots, and Gabriel Bell Albert Einstein: A Cultural Hero.

In addition to attending conference sessions, the students also had the opportunity to explore the Windy City.  The conference gala was held at the Field Museum of Natural History.
