Our group was one of the largest at the conference and
consisted of 23 students, 3 faculty members, and 5 staff members. Once
again, we have Betsy
and Bill Leitch and their Fund for Student Travel and Research to thank for the
tremendous student cohort!
Paul Grosswiler (journalism), Kathleen Ellis
(English), and Mark Haggerty (economics) presented Faculty Gateways to
Honors. Rachel Snell '07 (history) and James Redstone '07
(history) presented Honors Historiography: The Process and Methodologies for
Creating a History of Honors. Sarah Gamble '07 (history),
Michael King '06 (English), Emma Wojtal '07 (psychology), and
William Beaudoin '08 (political science) presented "A Cultural Odyssey" -
A Student-facilitated Gateway to the Arts on the student-facilitated
teaching model of our new course, A Cultural Odyssey. Michelle
Ouellette '06 (psychology)and Alia Whitehead '06
(microbiology) presented Gateways to Medical Schools: Is Honors the Key?
on the role of Honors in applying to medical schools. Jack Cohen '06
(environmental management and policy), Brigham McNaughton '07 (business
administration), and Matthew Dube '07 (mathematics) presented Living
Learning Communities in Honors, a discussion of Honors housing and its role
in building community in the Honors College. Dean Charlie Slavin,
Coordinator for Advancement Emily Ann Cain '02, Jessica Lukas '07
(psychology and sociology), and David LaPointe '07 (mechanical
engineering) presented Development in Honors: A Generational Model on
Honors events bringing prospective, current, and past Honors students together.
Samantha Foster '06 (animal and veterinary sciences) and Brittany Cheney
'06 (psychology and communication) presented Ties to Home - An
Exploration of American Family Values. Dean Charlie Slavin took
part in a session on Moving from Honors Program to Honors College.
Several UMaine groups took part in the idea exchange on Saturday morning.
Elizabeth Morse '07 (animal and veterinary sciences) presented Honors and
Peer-Tutoring, andSeth Robertson '06 (microbiology) and
Jack Cohen '06 (environmental management and policy) discussed The Last
Lecture Series: Fresh Ideas from Familiar Faces.
Three students presented posters:
Cassandra Patenaude '07 (molecular & cellular biology and
chemistry) presented The Combined Effects of Cyanobacterial
Lipopolysaccharides and Heavy Metals;
Rachel Snell '07 (history) presented A Fellow Disciple: The
Faith of John Adams;
Anne Wyllie '06 (animal and veterinary sciences) presented
Examining Isolates of Streptococcus Zooepidemicus in Equines.
Marianne Schneider '08 (international affairs) presented
International Students in Honors at the Diversity Workshop.
In addition to attending conference sessions, the students also
had an opportunity to explore the Gateway to the West. The conference gala
was held at the Jefferson Memorial Arch, and our group dinner was at the
Broadway Oyster Bar.
