"These are the only courses where I have taken theoretical physics as an English major, kept a group photo of my classmates and instructor on my desk, been pushed to think on an entirely new plane and been moved to tears by the sheer brilliance of the discussion."  Laurie House '92

      Honors College Headlines

The Honors College at The University of Maine provides a unique opportunity for a community of approximately six hundred and fifty motivated students to investigate diverse academic areas of the University, to be challenged in a supportive intellectual environment, and to critically engage fellow students and enthusiastic, distinguished faculty in thoughtful, provocative discussion.

From first- and second-year preceptorials, through third-year tutorials, and concluding with the thesis, the curriculum of the Honors College emphasizes learning which both broadens and deepens, expanding students’ perspectives by exploring areas of thought not closely related to their disciplines and allowing them to work in their majors with greater intensity than would be possible within a conventional course pattern.  From the welcome cookout the first week of classes, through pizza and jazz parties, trips to conferences, cultural performances on- and off-campus, and  Honors housing opportunities, and concluding with the pre-graduation celebration of Honors, students learn that the Honors College is much more than academics, too.  It's a college!
